Mark 9:21 So He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?”And he said, “From childhood. 22 And often he has thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” 23 Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”

This text from my devotional reading today shows the power of unconditional love and conditional faith.

Both Jesus and the father had unconditional love for a boy who was terribly afflicted. The father was desperate to get help for his son. He pleaded, “If you can do anything, help us.” He didn’t say, “Help the boy.” He said, “Help us,” which revealed the pain they both were experiencing.

Jesus did not say, “It’s done, your boy is healed.” He said, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Jesus ALWAYS requires faith from people who ask Him for something, no matter how desperate the situation.

When we believe in what God CAN do, we only have possibility and expectation. When we become convinced of what God WILL do, we possess reality and manifestation through faith. The father showed his honesty and confidence in Jesus,  “Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24)

That loving father went from Possibility to Reality when he allowed his pain and desperation to dissolve into confidence in the One he asked to help him and his afflicted son. His simple act of faith activated the power of God in Christ and the boy was healed.

Jesus always WANTS to help us. More than anything else, He wants our confidence and trust. Faith in God is the reality of a relationship with Jesus that releases power.
